About the Role

The maintenance mechanic performs a variety of duties including preventive maintenance, repair of buildings, structures and components, building equipment, fixtures, and utility components. The mechanic must possess a wide variety of skills and knowledge associated with carpentry, plumbing, metal fabrication, mobile equipment operation, soldering, brazing, welding, and oxy/acetylene cutting.

What You'll Do

  • As a work leader, the maintenance mechanic will: Convey to other workers the instructions received project assignment from the supervisor and get work underway by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individuals members of the Construction Crew; work along with other workers and set the work pace; and ensure that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available.
  • Obtain needed information or decisions from supervisor on problems that arise during the work, and maintain a current knowledge in order to answer questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other technical directives.
  • Ensure there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy; checking work in progress and at completion to ensure compliance with supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines; urging and advising other workers to follow instructions received from supervisor and to meet deadlines; and ensure that safety rules are followed.
  • Report to supervisor the status and progress of work and causes of work delays; employees in attendance; and answer supervisor's questions regarding overall work operations and problems, e.g., the need for additional on-the job training for individual employees.
  • Maintenance Mechanic Work Leader will lead a construction crew of3-9 employees, working individually or in groups, who may be maintenance mechanics, carpenters, telecommunications mechanics, electricians, and pipefitter.
  • The mix of occupations led will be based on the needs of the project.

  • Work Schedule: Monday- Friday, 7:00 a.m- 3:30 p.m Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic Leader/PD07241A Physical Requirements: Must independently lift large bulky and hard to grasp objects weighing up to 50 pounds or heavier objects with the assistance of other workers.
  • May work in tight or cramped places in uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time.
  • Works while standing, sitting, or kneeling, requiring reaching, lifting, and bending while using hand tools and power tools.
  • Uses ladders to climb up and down.
  • The position will require moderate physical exertion, including frequent lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, bending, stooping, crawling, and negotiating confined spaces, as well as occasional heavy lifting and strenuous exertion.
  • Employee will be required to work on high ladders and scaffolds as occasionally necessary.
  • The employee is standing or walking most of the time and must be in very good overall physical condition.
