About the Role
This position serves as a Maintenance Mechanic (Construction Crew) at the Kansas City Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as Maintenance Mechanic and provide journey level work in various tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, structure, fixtures, and utilities for an in-house construction crew.
What You'll Do
- →As a Maintenance Mechanic (Construction Crew), the incumbent performs a wide range of skilled duties across multiple trades to support construction, renovation, repair, and maintenance projects throughout the facility.
- →Major duties include, but are not limited to the following: Carpentry Perform rough and finish carpentry for construction and renovation projects.
- →Build and install walls, partitions, doors, frames, windows, ceilings, stairs, trim, shelving, and counters.
- →Install, alter, and remove drywall, metal studs, ceiling grids, tiles, and access panels.
- →Construct concrete forms, scaffolds, temporary walls, and protective barriers.
- →Install hardware (locksets, closers, kick plates, blinds) and specialty structures for sensitive areas (labs, clean rooms, ORs).
- →Prepare work areas and ensure required materials are available.
- →Finishing & Flooring Remove old flooring and prepare surfaces for new installations.
- →Measure, cut, fit, and install carpet, vinyl, tile, and other flooring materials.
- →Apply adhesives, create precise seams, and prepare subfloors.
- →Maintain clean, organized work areas.
- →Painting Set up scaffolding and prepare surfaces (washing, sanding, filling, plastering).
- →Mix and apply paint to walls, ceilings, masonry, and specialized spaces.
- →Install lath, metal studs, jambs, corner beads, and access panels for plastering.
