About the Role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

What You'll Do

  • The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Surgical Specialty Clinics provides a vital role in the delivery of patient-centered care.
  • The LPN works collaboratively with surgeons, registered nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the highest quality of care for patients undergoing surgical procedures.
  • This position involves direct patient care, patient education, and support in various surgical specialty areas.
  • The LPN will assist surgeons or other healthcare providers during minor surgical procedures(suture/staple removal, wound care, dressing changes, specimen collection, etc.), set up surgical instruments and equipment, ensuring sterility and proper functioning.
  • Prepares patients for minor surgical procedures or in-clinic interventions, including patient identification, consent verification, and procedural site marking as directed.
  • Utilizes proper techniques for specimen collection and handling.
  • Ensure that all necessary equipment is in stock and always maintained properly.
  • Provides patient and family education regarding surgical procedures, discharge instructions, wound care, medication administration and follow-up requirements under the direction of the provider or RN.
  • Responds to patient inquires and concerns, providing reassurance and information as needed.
  • Ensures timely and completed documentation in electronic medical record system in accordance with VA policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and privacy in accordance with HIPAA and VA regulations.
  • Actively participates in quality improvement initiatives, infection control practices, and staff education pertinent to surgical specialty care.
  • Keeps current with best practices and new developments in surgical nursing through continuing education and professional development activities.
  • Maintains licensure and certifications as required by state and federal regulations.

  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
