The Gastroenterology (GI) Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) functions as a member of the GI/ENDO multidisciplinary team and assists the RN in the care of patients in acute, sub-acute, or chronic states of illness. The GI MIT delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care with minimal instruction to assigned patients while developing technical competencies.
What You'll Do
- →Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Major Duties Include, but are not limited to the following: Knowledge of complex gastroenterology procedures, ablation procedures, mucosal resection procedures, fine needle aspiration procedures, stenting, and capsule studies.
- →Ability to provide briefings and orientations to hospital staff including physicians.
- →Knowledge of regulatory and advisory agencies such as Joint Commission, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA), American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASG), and applicable laws such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA).
- →Knowledge of endoscopic equipment and use in basic and complex endoscopic procedures.
- →Ability to set up endoscopy equipment, ensuring endoscopes and ancillary equipment functions properly.
- →Knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to the GI system, with ability to recognize and report obvious abnormalities during procedures.
- →Ability to assist physician with specialized, complex procedures.
- →Knowledge of universal precautions and disinfection techniques and ability to follow SOP's to clean reusable medical equipment (RME).
- →Ability to use basic computer systems and programs to record patient and endoscopic data, adhering to patient privacy and information security policies.
- →Ability to act as a mentor or preceptor to lower graded technicians.
- →Ability to analyze deviations from the expected, determine whether the deviations are machine or patient related, and respond according to the findings.
- →Ability to deliver patient care, including vital sign measurements and medication administration.
- →Maintains an adequate inventory of disposable supplies and demonstrates skill in the VA's Group Inventory Process (GIP).
- →Reorders supplies needed for day to day functioning via the Purchase Card Program.
