The GS-9 Lead Health Technician (Ophthalmology) serves as a senior technical provider within the Optometry/Ophthalmology Clinics, performing specialized clinical duties and providing leadership, coordination, and oversight of assigned Health Technicians. The Lead Technician carries out clinical and administrative responsibilities with significant independence and is responsible for ensuring effective patient flow, technical accuracy, and adherence to VHA standards.
What You'll Do
- →Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Health Technicians in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) support Optometrists and Ophthalmologists in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, follow-up care and patient counseling.
- →At the GS-9 Lead Level, the Health Technician (Ophthalmology) performs difficult ophthalmic technical duties with considerable latitude for the exercise of independent judgment.
- →The higher-level duties consist of significant scope, administrative independence, complexity (difficulty) and range of variety as described in this standard and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.
- →The Lead Health Technician (Ophthalmology) carries additional responsibilities that involve the oversight of specific services within the Optometry/Ophthalmology clinic.
- →Advanced Clinical Duties: Independently performs complex diagnostic ophthalmic/optometric testing with minimal oversight.
- →Ensures accuracy and reliability of clinical imaging and diagnostic data.
- →Supports ophthalmologists and optometrists during patient evaluation and clinical procedures.
- →Provides mentoring, hands-on instruction, and assesses competency and competency reinforcement for technicians, students, and trainees.
- →Lead and Oversight Responsibilities: The GS-9 Lead Technician oversees specific operational areas and daily clinic function, including: 1.
- →Work Assignments: Distributes workload based on patient volumes, staffing needs, provider schedules, and urgency of care.
- →Adjusts assignments during call-outs or high-demand periods to maintain smooth clinic operations.
- →Responsible for coordinating and managing access telephone clinic staffing and operation. 2.
- →Monitoring Workflow: Monitors daily performance, patient throughput, wait times, and room utilization.
- →Identifies and resolves bottlenecks to ensure efficient patient movement and minimal delays. 3.
