About the Role

This position is located at Independence National Historical Park in the Facility Maintenance Division, which also supports Edgar Allan Poe NHS, Thaddeus Kosciuszko NM, and Gloria Dei NHS. The Laborer performs indoor and outdoor maintenance, including grounds and facility upkeep, material handling, digging and repairs, vegetation cutting, and janitorial support. Work requires heavy physical effort in varied weather.

What You'll Do

  • Scrubs, strips, waxes, and buffs floors using heavy-powered scrubbers, buffers, mops, and related equipment; vacuums and cleans rugs and carpets.
  • Washes and cleans windows, blinds, office areas, bathrooms, kitchens, and common areas using appropriate cleaning chemicals and products for various surfaces.
  • Performs janitorial and custodial duties as assigned or as backup support to ensure facilities remain clean, sanitary, and safe.
  • Stocks shelves, inventories supplies, and keeps shop and storage areas clean, organized, and safe.
  • Loads and unloads materials and supplies and moves furniture and equipment as needed.
  • Uses hand tools and light power equipment to complete maintenance tasks and may work from ladders or scaffolding to perform cleaning or maintenance duties.
  • Supports grounds and facility upkeep, including picking up litter, painting surfaces, and assisting with general maintenance tasks.
  • This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition.
  • Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
  • The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last.
  • This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension.
  • No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.

Requirements

  • Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards.
  • A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Probationary Period: As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period.
  • This period is an extension of the appointment process and requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service.
  • In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider: your performance and conduct; the needs and interests of the agency; whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.
  • Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized.
  • In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary period, such appointments are terminated.
  • Upon completion of your probationary period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.
  • There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
