Serves as an Industrial Hygienist in the Quality Safety Value Service at the Johnathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center where duties include, but are not limited to, the following: asbestos control and abatement, ethylene oxide, formaldehyde, hearing conservation, hazard communication, nitrous oxide, mercury, hazardous and infectious waste management, water testing and treatment, respirator program, and anti-neoplastic drugs.
What You'll Do
- →Primary Duties Performs various duties to assess work practices and environmental conditions for potential hazards to the health and safety of workers.
- →These duties include conducting studies, analyzing findings, and preparing various reports related to industrial hygiene and occupational health.
- →Environmental conditions involve different hazards, like biological, chemical, noise, heat, radiation, and others.
- →Jobs are available in shops, production areas, laboratories, small spaces, and outdoors.
- →Conducts surveys to identify and evaluate health hazards and potential health hazards.
- →Surveys involve determining compliance with established occupational and environmental permissible exposure limits.
- →Performs sampling and analysis using standard methods to determine the nature and degree of toxic material present in a variety of materials, such as environmental samples and Industrial products.
- →Consults with and advises employees, including occupational health personnel, on matters of epidemiology, particularly in relation to health hazards in the workplace.
- →Participates in the development of training courses for personnel, preparing the course agenda, making arrangements for demonstrations, drills, and giving technical instructions on occupational health and safety subjects.
- →Establishes new policies or procedures when directed by changing standards and conditions, as well as reviews existing policies or procedures.
- →Federal, state, local, VHA, and Joint Commission standards may mandate changes.
- →Knowledge Required By the Position Comprehensive knowledge of industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices applicable to the performance of relatively routine industrial investigations, or to portions of large and complex investigations.
- →Identify and evaluate occupational health hazards in industrial environments with conventional operations, using available literature to support hazard recognition and assessment.
- →Knowledge required in order to recommend control measures or possible approaches to the control of harmful exposure.
