About the Role

The histopathology technologist independently performs a full range of specialized tests. Utilize information technology systems to apply histopathology techniques and broad scientific principles from the fields of biology, chemistry, anatomy, and physiology. This histopathology technologists acts as a technical resource, troubleshooting a variety of specialized lab tests, identifying suboptimal issues, and uses independent judgement and resources to resolve concerns.

What You'll Do

  • Summary of duties include but not limited to: Performs preparation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining of surgical, cytologic, and autopsy specimens, with the GS-7 completing tasks under supervision and the GS-9 performing them independently.
  • Prepares routine and special stains, including immunohistochemical procedures; GS-9 performs advanced staining and troubleshooting, while GS-7 performs routine methods under guidance.
  • Conducts decalcification of ossified and bone marrow tissue, ensuring proper processing and tissue preservation appropriate to the grade level.
  • Assists with or independently performs frozen section preparation to support intra-operative diagnosis.
  • Documents all specimen receipt, processing steps, quality control, and workflow activities accurately in the laboratory information systems.
  • Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots histology and cytology instrumentation; GS-7 identifies basic issues and reports problems, while GS-9 resolves complex malfunctions and coordinates repairs.
  • Supports autopsy operations, including preparation of decedents, instruments, and proper documentation for morgue activities.
  • Performs cytology specimen preparation, staining, and assists with procedures such as FNA or EBUS as needed.
  • Ensures proper storage, retention, and shipment of slides, blocks, and specimens according to regulatory requirements.
  • Participates in training of students and new personnel, with the GS-9 serving as a technical resource and assisting in procedure development and updates.
  • Adheres to laboratory quality control, safety, infection control, and information security policies at all grade levels.
  • Provides professional communication and customer service to clinicians, staff, and external partners in support of the laboratory's mission.
