About the Role

In this position you will work as a member of the Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center (MWEOC), Facilities Management and Operations Branch. MWEOC is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, approximately 60 miles west of Washington, DC. The ideal candidate for this position has experience leading others in the repair and maintenance of heavy mobile equipment and fleet vehicles and administering the maintenance program.

What You'll Do

  • All MWEOC staff have emergency assignments and are considered deployed in place.
  • Exercises and activations are planned and unplanned, and may require long hours, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • All MWEOC employees are: (1) required to use a government-issued electronic device (to include cellular phones); (2) subject to recall during emergency situations; and (3) required to perform work in locations both above and below ground.
  • What will I do in this position if hired?
  • In this position, you will serve as a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic Leader responsible for leading others and performing work involved in the maintenance, repair and modification of heavy-duty vehicles and mobile equipment.
  • Typical assignments include: Planning the use of workers, equipment, facilities, materials and day-to-day projects.
  • Assigning work to individuals and providing technical direction or help in accomplishing difficult work steps/processes and investigating work related problems such as excessive costs or low productivity for implementation of corrective actions to resolve work problems.
  • Assuring safety and housekeeping practices are followed, determining the training needs of employees and arranging for accomplishments.
  • Making repairs to heavy mobile equipment and vehicles including overhauling/rebuilding equipment/vehicles containing diesel, gasoline and other types of combustion engines both automatic and standard transmissions with heavy duty drive line systems and hydraulic utility systems and controls (e.g., construction, earth moving, firefighting and comparable industrial or special equipment).
  • Operating all types of equipment such as motor graders, backhoes, front end loaders, excavators, dump trucks, fork-lifts and special use equipment such as platform lifts and cranes over uneven terrain and improved/unimproved roads, etc.
