About the Role

This position is located in the Office of Safety Recommendations & Communications, Government and Industry Affairs Division (GA). GA is the National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB) primary liaison with Congress, the White House, the Government Accountability Office, other federal agencies, and state and local government. GA supports interaction with the transportation industry regarding agency initiatives.

What You'll Do

  • As a Government and Industry Affairs Specialist, GS-0301-12/13, you will perform the following major duties: At the GS-12, typical duties may include:-- Assist senior staff in coordinating the agency's relationships with Congress, government agencies, state and local officials and industry.
  • Support drafting and review of Congressional and state and local legislative testimony, correspondence, and supports staff preparation for hearings and briefings.
  • Maintain information on pending or proposed legislation, including bills and resolutions introduced, committee reports, committee hearings, documents, and public and private laws enacted, impacting transportation safety.
  • Respond, orally and in writing, to formal and informal inquiries from Members of Congress, state legislators, and staff to include responses to correspondence and written requests for information regarding NTSB operations, investigations, and policies.
  • At the GS-13, in addition to duties at the lower grade level, typical duties may include:-- Write, review, and edit Congressional testimony for the NTSB.
  • Review past NTSB positions and meets with senior staff so that initiatives are reflected in the testimony.
  • Review testimony with Board Members so that they understand and approve proposed testimony.
  • Maintain information on pending or proposed legislation, including bills and resolutions introduced, committee reports, committee hearings, documents, and public and private laws enacted, impacting transportation safety.
  • Meet with Congressional staff members to brief them on NTSB initiatives and policies.
  • Ensure that the manner of presentation does not result in misconceptions or misinterpretations.
  • Accompany senior NTSB staff to Congressional briefings.
  • Handle requests from Congressional staffs for background data on NTSB plans or proposals, status of NTSB investigation reports and hearings, and other matters of interest to Congress.
  • Prepare reports, memoranda and correspondence for review and approval of the Chief.
  • Assemble, coordinate concurrence, and present information, including opposing views and alternative proposals.
