About the Role
The Assistant Secretary of War for Acquisition (ASD(A)) is responsible for advising the Secretary of War and USW(A&S) on matters relating to acquisition, including management and investments in the EW systems portfolio across DoW and the integration and protection of technology that enable capability for the warfighter, including policies and procedures.

- →Incumbents typical work assignments may include the following: Manage Capability Portfolios: Serve as the Electromagnetic Protection Portfolio Manager, responsible for developing, analyzing, and recommending strategic positions and views for Directorate and higher-level leadership.
- →Lead Technical and Programmatic Reviews: Direct the engineering and programmatic evaluations of assigned portfolios to identify and resolve complex issues, including technical risks, unrealistic cost/schedule estimates, and inappropriate acquisition strategies.
- →Conduct Strategic Gap Analysis: Analyze mission capability portfolios (such as Counter-C5ISRT and Counter-Directed Energy Weapons) to identify capability gaps, and make critical recommendations on program tradeoffs to balance budgets across military Services and warfighting domains.
- →Coordinate Cross-Agency Assessments: Integrate efforts across military service staffs and OSW offices to resolve emerging issues, provide coordinated assessments, and deliver authoritative answers to OSW and Congressional leadership.
- →Support Budget Reviews and Technology Risk Reduction: Participate in OSW Program and Budget Reviews, support Congressional reporting requirements, and collaborate with research and engineering offices to promote early risk reduction and the demonstration of new technologies.
