You will serve as a Maintenance Worker Trails with the National Park Service at Flagstaff Area National Monuments. The purpose of the position is to perform, at the sub-journeyman level, the maintenance, repair, and construction of Park trails. Duty station may be in an area away from park headquarters with general duties performed in a park. This position requires frequent overnight backcountry stays.
What You'll Do
- →Career Seasonal Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as permanent appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis.
- →You will work for approximately January through October and November through December, and you will be in a non-pay status (10/1/27 to 11/1/27) for the remainder of the year.
- →Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Perform trail repair and construction in front-country locations using a variety of hand and power tools, including digging ditches, grading surfaces, repairing stone walls, and installing water-bars and retainer-bars.
- →Operate jackhammers, chainsaws, gas-powered drills, picks, rock-bars, shovels, and other tools required for trail work, obtaining and maintaining necessary certifications prior to use.
- →Construct, repair, and maintain asphalt-surfaced trails in developed areas using equipment such as skid-steer loaders, dump trucks, rollers, and vibratory compactors, ensuring work meets ADA accessibility standards.
- →Build and repair wet and dry-laid retaining walls in rugged and high-exposure environments, applying masonry techniques, mortar mixing, re-pointing, and safely using fall-protection equipment on elevated or hazardous ledges.
- →Serve as acting crew leader during the regular leader's absence, requiring knowledge of ongoing projects, adherence to safety regulations, completion of work reports, and effective leadership of trail maintenance staff.
