About the Role

The Health Service Area (HSA) Executive Director serves as the Chief executive of the Service Area, an integrated health care system for Veterans spanning a broad geographic area. The incumbent is responsible for the effective day to day operational oversight of multiple components of the HSA primary, secondary, and tertiary care medical centers; multi-specialty and sole practitioner clinics; nursing homes; and other linked access points providing care for Veterans.

What You'll Do

  • The responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Serves as the Chief Regional Executive overseeing a Health Service Area within an integrated health care system for Veterans across a broad geographic region.
  • Holds full delegated authority and executive-level responsibility for supervising VA health care facility Executive Directors.
  • Plans, organizes, directs, coordinates, and evaluates all medical, administrative, and support operations within the Health Service Area to ensure the effective delivery of a comprehensive range of medical care and treatment.
  • Additionally, is accountable for advancing the organization's core patient care mission, as well as supporting teaching and research initiatives Establishes the strategic direction and provides guidance for regional areas to effectively address local health care needs for Veterans.
  • Strengthens and enhances relationships among facilities, VISNs, and the VA by actively participating in administrative, educational, community, and social events with federal, state, local, and affiliated organizations involved in health care delivery, as well as Veteran service organizations and community affairs.
  • Provides the effective management of multiple components of the Service Area primary, secondary, and tertiary care medical centers; multi specialty and sole practitioner clinics; nursing homes; counseling centers; and other linked access points providing care for Veterans.
  • Provides Leadership and management skills in the following areas: systems and business management; strategic planning; quality assessment/improvement; performance measurements/ improvements; human resources and professional staff management; and personal leadership and ethics.
  • Formulated and implements major operating plans and policies to be executed by the up to 10,000+ employees involved in both providing Veteran patient services and analyzing the provision of those services.
  • Develops and administers a balanced financial and business plan for a multi-billion dollar budget.
  • Serves as a role model in developing and maintaining supportive working relationships with community organizations, other federal agencies and branches of government, and Veteran Service Organizations.
  • Ensures funding for and monitoring employees development programs to ensure a trained workforce to provide services to Veteran patients.
  • Provides operational coordination by aligning facility operations with VISN and national standards and ensures facilities execute clinical services aligned with VISN priorities.
