  • HUD's Office of Disaster Management (ODM) reports to the Office of the Deputy Secretary and advises the Secretary, Deputy Secretary, and departmental leadership on all aspects of disaster preparedness, response, mitigation, and recovery.
  • ODM coordinates and collaborates with offices within the department to identify, mitigate and address national risks to HUD's clients, programs, public resources, and critical infrastructure.
  • ODM works closely with federal, state, and local agencies, as well as non-profit organizations, to assess community needs and provide resources that support disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.
  • The Office also provides critical guidance on the integration of disaster management practices into HUD's broader mission.
  • As an Emergency Management Specialist, you will: Coordinate nation-wide field level preparedness, response, and recovery operations under inter-agency and intra-departmental initiatives in their assigned HUD regions.
  • Coordinate with federal, state, and local officials and external agencies to provide flexible, efficient responses to disasters and long-term recovery activities.
  • Review legislation, statutes, policies, and Departmental guidance (including from FEMA and other Executive Branch departments with disaster authorities) and provide technical assistance to HUD staff and partners on these documents.
  • Serve as a technical advisor to volunteers for analyzing and evaluating data derived for housing impact assessments to draw conclusions and identify complex disaster recovery problems.
  • Manage HUD's resources to ensure that those resources are made available to the declared disaster areas in coordination with HUD program offices, support offices, Regional and Field Offices and federal partners.

  • A probationary or trial period may be required.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon supervisory certification that continued employment will benefit the Federal Service; the certification will occur no less than 30 days before the end of the probationary/trial period.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Public Trust - Background Investigation will be required.
  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.
  • Have your salary sent to a financial institution of your choice by Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer.
  • If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
  • Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i-9.
  • Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
  • Obtain and use a Government-issued charge card for business-related travel.
