About the Role

Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Professional Responsibility, Investigative Operations Directorate, Operations Support Division, Workforce Development and Training, location negotiable after selection.

What You'll Do

  • Temporary Assignment: To meet agency needs, this position will be filled on a temporary basis not-to-exceed (NTE) six months, with possible extension(s) not-to-exceed (NTE) one-year.
  • You may be returned, at any time, to the position you held prior to this temporary promotion or to a different position of equivalent grade and pay, and that the return is not subject to the procedures found in 5 C.F.R. §§ 351, 432, 752, and 771.
  • If you are currently at the grade level of the position announced, this action will result in a reassignment, and you may be returned at any time to a same or similar position held prior to this temporary assignment.
  • If you currently hold a grade level higher than the grade being announced, this action will result in a change to lower grade, and you may be returned at any time to the position held prior to this temporary assignment or to the same or similar position at the lower grade level.
  • Your return will be based on a mobility agreement.
  • Joining Customs & Border Protection will allow you to leverage your advanced investigative knowledge, skills, and abilities in support of complex, challenging, and sensitive criminal, civil and administrative investigations.
  • This is an exciting opportunity to strengthen the Department's mission to protect the homeland by contributing to policy development, mentoring less experienced agents, and evaluating investigative objectives, strategies, and goals.
  • This position starts at a salary of $129,258.00 (GS-14, Step 1) to $168,040.00 (GS-14, Step 10) Duties include, but not limited to the following: Managing training programs to include curriculum development, liaison with external stakeholders and conducting classroom training.
  • Mentoring and assisting in the professional development of less experienced agents, working with newly hired criminal investigators or existing criminal investigators requiring additional developmental or technical assistance.
  • Researching and reviewing policies, regulations, and laws; evaluating investigative techniques; advising on operational issues; and developing or updating policies based on changing requirements.
  • Rigorous Law Enforcement Officer Special Retirement Coverage: This is a rigorous position subject to mandatory retirement under the special retirement provisions for law enforcement officers under CSRS and FERS 5 CFR 842.803, 5 CFR 831.903, 5 USC 8425(b), 5 USC 8335(b), 5 USC 8412(d), 5 USC 8336(c).

  • Motor Vehicle Operation: You must possess the Ability to operate a Government Owned Vehicle.

  • Both basic and advanced training programs are designed to prepare law enforcement personnel with the skills, aptitudes, and competencies required to serve as a Criminal Investigator.
