About the Role

This position is located at the Reserve Fleets, Office of Ship Operations, Office of the Deputy Associate Administrator for Federal Sealift, Office of the Associate Administrator for Strategic Sealift, Maritime Administration (MARAD).

What You'll Do

  • The Crane Operator: Operates cranes with telescoping and lattice booms to load, unload, move, and position heavy materials and equipment at various work sites.
  • Performs crane operations requiring precision setting of items with small tolerances, where expensive mechanical parts can be damaged, and works near personnel where errors can cause serious injury or death.
  • Operates cranes using all boom lengths, angles, and positions, including lifts near or at the crane's rated capacity.
  • Makes difficult clearance judgments in challenging load situations and may coordinate tandem operations with overhead cranes in a warehouse setting.
  • Uses crane attachments such as hooks, pallet jacks, chain chasers, drag anchors, spreader bars, anchor slings, and operates diesel- powered compact articulating cranes.
  • The ideal candidate should possess the skill set and ability to operate cranes with telescoping and lattice booms to load, unload, move and position heavy material and equipment.
  • The ideal candidate can also perform operator maintenance on equipment operated, inspect cables for wear, and replace them as necessary.

Requirements

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
  • BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: A background security investigation is required for all selected individuals.
  • Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of the security investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Failure to meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
  • PRE-EMPLOYMENT HEALTH ASSESSMENT: If selected for the position you will be required to complete a pre-employment/pre-appointment medical examination and Functional Capacity Examination.
  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: The employee makes continual control changes to maneuver the crane and load around obstructions, to stay within the lifting capacity, and to position the load at the desired location.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: The employee works outdoors in a partially enclosed crane cab in all types of weather.
  • They exposed to unpleasant noise, heat, and fumes produced by the engine.
  • They are exposed to the possibility of injury caused by swinging loads or from the crane overturning.
  • Additionally, the employee is exposed to a greater possibility of injury from overturning because they must frequently work near or at the crane's lifting capacity PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You must complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).
  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).
