About the Role

This position is located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, OJS, Indian Police Academy in Artesia, New Mexico; Devils Lake, North Dakota. Permanent Change of Station (PCS): Maybe Authorized

What You'll Do

  • As Correctional Officer Instructor, GS-0007, your typical work assignments may include, but not limited to: Supervises criminal offenders while in detention/correctional institutions or community based detention/correctional treatment or rehabilitation facilities.
  • Ensures facility, staff and offender are safe and properly cared for.
  • Manages and coordinates offender services, activities and programs that could entail escorting offenders to places of employment, appointments, activities, etc.
  • Enforces standards, rules and regulations provided in the Code of Federal Regulation (CFR), Bureau of Indian Affairs Manual (BIAM), Department of the Interior (DOI), Departmental Manuals (DM) and other references governing the operation of the detention/correctional facilities and programs.
  • Oversees the admission and departure of criminal offenders according to regulations and operational description.
  • Ensures appropriate documentation is in place.
  • Responsible for the orientation (i.e. rules, expectations) for new arrivals and the safety of the offenders and his/her belongings during transport to and from a facility.
  • Provides preliminary interviews for physical/mental health and classification assessment.
  • Instructs classes and conducts practical exercises according to pre-established lesson plans and course outlines for the students to achieve course objectives.
  • Monitors and evaluates the performance of students, investigates student misconduct and provides advice and counseling.
  • Participates in committees to review curriculum, makes oral and written presentations on training courses and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Serves as program manager for training programs, supervises students, other instructors, and coordinates all logistics for a Corrections Training Program.
