About the Role

This vacancy is for a GS-0301-11, Command Center Watchstander located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, D11 COMMAND CENTER -DRMC in ALAMEDA, California.

What You'll Do

  • You will serve as a Command Center Watchstander and be responsible to oversee and monitor the units response to Search and Rescue (SAR) cases in order to minimize loss of life and property at sea.
  • Specifically, the incumbent ensures collection of initial information, classifies cases, establishes documentation, and develops an awareness of the case sufficient to identify suitable response.
  • The incumbent subsequently coordinates a response with Coast Guard and other agency resources.
  • The incumbent plans cases to maximize the probability of success (POS) using all available information and tools.
  • Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.
  • Typical work assignments include: Developing search action plans while investigating and coordinating ongoing activities and operations with the Area of Responsibility (AOR).
  • Providing command and control over Coast Guard assets in all maritime law enforcement operations within the District AOR.
  • Analyzing and disseminating a variety of nautical data such as current, tides, weather (including wind and storm alerts, visibility, and water depth).
  • Gathering relevant information concerning Coast Guard missions and notifying appropriate agencies and participants.
  • Addressing industry representatives, consumer groups, and members of trade association meetings in forums regarding specific regulatory issues, search and rescue concerns, boating safety, or other issues involving Coast Guard operations.
  • Providing training and upholding qualification standards for members standing watch in the Command Center.
  • Advising on routine or common program problems and issues.
  • Mandatory training is required which must be successfully completed and other training may occur as necessary for success in the position.
  • Within one-year of arrival the incumbent will be required to complete Maritime Search and Rescue Planning School (TRACEN Yorktown), and Command Center School (TRACEN Yorktown).
