About the Role

The Nurse IV Nursing Excellence Chief Nurse provides leadership and oversight for daily clinical and administrative operations within the Nursing Excellence Office. Functions as an advisor, administrator, educator, consultant, and mentor who possesses a wide range of experience and leadership ability. Assumes a leadership role in facilitating regulatory compliance for internal and external oversight bodies and Veterans Health Administration (VHA) performance measures.

What You'll Do

  • The Nursing Excellence Chief Nurse ensures there are systems and processes in place to provide safe, quality care that is consistent with external benchmarks.
  • Oversight of nursing professional governance and related activities, and other performance improvement (PI) programs.
  • Functions or scope of assigned duties include, but are not limited to: Executes leadership that is characterized by substantial and continuous responsibility and accountability for population groups or integrated programs that cross services and/or discipline lines and influence the organizational healthcare mission.
  • Researches and/or analyzes unstable or complex program issues, and, based on conditions and factors that relate to the subject program and related programs, determines what information is required.
  • Compiles, assembles, and classifies statistics from source materials, compute statistical data, and verify the authenticity of source material.
  • Reviews information, reconciles conflicting data, and devises new or modified methods to analyze findings and to develop recommendations and proposals.
  • Performs special studies, which includes analyzing data, developing formats to report the results of studies, and recommending alternative courses of action.
  • Reviews comprehensive analysis and recommends remedial actions.
  • Administers established follow-up procedures for ensuring that facility remedial actions are implemented in a timely manner, independently taking appropriate action necessary to implement programs or activities and correct problems.
  • Leads the organization's pursuit for Pathway to Excellence and the Magnet Recognition.
  • Supports executive leadership in supporting a nursing environment of excellence through relationships built with staff and advanced practice nurses in the immediate and larger community.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.

  • Must pass pre-employment physical evaluation.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • You may be required to serve a probationary period.
  • As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 2-year probationary period during which we will evaluate your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest.
  • In determining if your employment advances the public interest, we may consider: your performance and conduct; the needs and interests of the agency; whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.
