About the Role

This position is located in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, Public Office Division. The Public Office division receives incoming documents, dockets filing and pleadings; maintaining official case files; answering public inquiries; providing internal mail service; and supporting courtroom operations. The Public Office is under the authority of the Clerk of the Court.

What You'll Do

  • Brief Description of Duties: Processes all newly filed notices of appeal, petitions for review of agency decisions, special writs, writs of mandamus, applications for allowance of appeals, and bar governance matters.
  • Dockets all relevant information, setting and assigning case tickets.
  • Proofreads all elements of each new appeal and consults with the supervisor as needed.
  • Identifies discrepancies in case records and refers complex issues to the supervisor.
  • Processes and maintains assigned case files using established court procedures.
  • Reviews legal findings for completeness and procedural compliance.
  • Ensures all submissions are properly coded and are in compliance with court rules, and dockets or rejects submissions in line with Public Office procedures.
  • Engages and communicates with parties regarding non-compliant submissions and recommends appropriate actions for resolution.
  • Coordinates with Court of Appeals and Superior Court staff to secure inmate information from the applicable D.C. or Federal systems.
  • Maintains and distributes informational materials and updates litigant, entity, and attorney data as needed.
  • Provides in-person office coverage on a rotating schedule.

Requirements

  • Must be a current District of Columbia Court employee.
  • To determine eligibility, employees should refer to policies 200 and 210.
  • At a minimum, candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • You must upload a copy of your college transcript or degree for consideration.
  • The transcript must show the name of the college or university, your name, degree conferred date, a list of courses with credit hours, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.
  • Foreign Education: If you are using foreign education to meet qualification requirements, you must upload a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript at the time of application to receive credit for that education.

  • Most military, federal and District of Columbia government service counts toward the time required to go into the next higher annual leave category.
  • Employees can carry over no more than 240 hours of annual leave into the next leave year.
  • Sick Leave is used for personal medical needs, care of a family member, or adoption related purposes.
  • Full-time employees earn four (4) hours of sick leave biweekly.
