About the Role
This position is a Supervisory Aviation Safety Specialist (Branch Chief, Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS)), GW-1825-14 assigned to the Headquarters (HQ) Aviation: UAS organization for the US Wildland Fire Service.
What You'll Do
- →As a Branch Chief, Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS), your duties will include but are not limited to the following: Leads the UAS Flight Standards program for the USWFS, translating FAA, NWCG, and DOI aviation policies into field-ready operational standards and guidance, and ensuring compliance across bureaus.
- →Plans and coordinates UAS operations for wildland fire and all-risk incidents nationwide, facilitating resource mobilization, airspace coordination, data stewardship, and operational advisement to IMTs and aviation managers.
- →Develops and administers interagency UAS training and qualification programs; certifies personnel; maintains qualification and currency systems; and leads or supports training deliveries, academies, and workshops.
- →Supervises Aviation Safety Inspectors (UAS), sets performance standards, manages recruitment and discipline, and oversees budgeting, procurement, and administrative functions for the branch.
- →Ensures DOI representation and leadership in interagency UAS coordination forums, collaborating with NWCG and partner agencies to evolve standards, share best practices, and implement emerging technologies.
Requirements

- ✓Suitability for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation.

- ✓The incumbent must possess or be able to obtain a valid FAA Remote Pilot Certificate (Part 107) to perform the duties of the position.
- ✓Must pass a pre-employment medical examination and may be subject to post-employment medical examinations to determine.
- ✓Notice of Financial Disclosure Report Requirement: This position is subject to a financial disclosure requirement, and you will be required to complete OGE Form 450 as applicable within 30 days of your appointment Individuals assigned male at birth after 12-31-59 must be registered for the Selective Service.

- ✓Supervisory Probationary Period: Selectees who have not previously completed a supervisory probationary period, will be required to serve a one-year supervisory/managerial probationary period for this position.
- ✓A condition of employment for accepting this position, may be required to serve a 1-year probationary period OR 2-year trial period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.
- ✓The probationary/trial period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service.
- ✓In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider' your performance and conduct; the needs and interests of the agency;- whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and- whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.
- ✓Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized.
- ✓In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period, such appointments are terminated.
