About the Role
The Blind Rehabilitation Specialist-Orientation and Mobility Department position is located at the Gulf Coast Blind Rehabilitation Center (GCBRC) in Biloxi, Mississippi. The GCBRC training and instruction in blind and vision rehabilitation provides services for visually impaired Veterans and Service Members. The purpose is to enhance the quality of life for individuals with vision loss through participation in a comprehensive and individualized rehabilitation program.
What You'll Do
- →Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Duties of the Blind Rehabilitation Specialist include, but are not limited to: Provides direct patient care and support services to an adult population of Veterans which is characterized by a very significant number of older Veterans.
- →Tailors rehabilitation care and support services are tailored to meet the needs of the individualized Veteran.
- →Ensures that program assessments and delivery of services are responsive to the concerns of individual Veterans to the extent possible.
- →Evaluates and assesses needs, capabilities and limitations, goal setting and prescribing a treatment plan for individuals experiencing blindness/visual impairment caused by injury or disease.
- →Develops and coordinates the Veteran's Interdisciplinary Plan of Care (IPOC) with input from the Veteran, family and all team members.
- →Studies visual and non-visual barriers and related procedures that result in activity limitations, participation restrictions, loss of vocational and avocational opportunities, and psychological distress.
- →Uses diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and instrumentation to identify and resolve or minimize these problems.
- →Assesses the difficulties confronting the Veteran and the barriers to treatment and then develop and provide intervention designed to enhance the Blind and Vision Rehabilitation process.
- →Develops a treatment plan in conjunction with an interdisciplinary team to improve the quality of life for blind and visually impaired Veterans through the development of skills and capabilities needed for personal independence, emotional stability and the successful integration into community, family and environment.
- →Responsible for using and maintaining technological equipment (discipline specific) necessary to assist in the Veteran's rehabilitation needs and processes such as electronic travel aids, computer assisted technology, closed circuit television, speech output and input devices, large print devices and Braille devices.
- →Determines the need for these devices based on type, nature and severity of the problem, and assessments, and instructs the Veteran in the proper use of the device along with its abilities and limitations.
- →Works with family members and/or significant others to educate and counsel about the ramifications of visual impairment.
- →Develops in-service education for blind individuals/family in order that they may gain a greater understanding of the complexities of blindness and the rehabilitation process and for the family that they may gain a greater understanding.of the Veteran's visual impairment and obtain information on how BRC training has impacted the Veteran's adjustment to sight loss and independent function.
- →Maintains awareness of new technological developments in the field through research and education.
Requirements

- ✓Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
- ✓Must be able to independently operate Government Vehicle.
- ✓Must provide clean driving record report from the DMV and copy of drivers license during the pre-employment process.

- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
