About the Role

The Supervisory Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) supports the Nurse Manager (NM) in overseeing operations of a nursing unit/patient care area. Fosters team development, ensures compliance with standards of clinical practice, and serves as a key liaison between staff and leadership. This role combines clinical proficiency with leadership responsibilities and is often considered part of the succession plan for future NM positions, providing opportunities to develop management skills.

What You'll Do

  • Functions as a proficient clinician and is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing or overseeing direct patient care.
  • Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates delivery of care based on age specific components.
  • Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care.
  • Demonstrates sound decision-making and judgment and possess excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Self-directed and influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team and leading innovative process improvement initiatives.
  • The Nurse II Supervisory ANM supports the NM with the operation of their designated unit(s).
  • Provides coverage for other ANMs as needed.
  • Responsible and accountable for the direction and oversight of specific orientation, training, development of staff, and evaluation of individual staff performance.
  • Functions as a role model, educator, practitioner, and leader.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.

  • Must pass pre-employment physical evaluation.
  • A drug test is required for the position.
  • The position is subject to random drug testing.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
