About the Role
The Assistant Chief Nurse executes leadership that is characterized by substantial and continuous responsibility and accountability for population groups or integrated programs that cross service and/or discipline lines, influence organizational mission and health care, and is responsible for outcomes. The selectee is expected to travel to Jacksonville, Ocala, Tallahassee, Gainesville, or Lake City. The duty location will be assigned based on the selectee's place of residence.
What You'll Do
- →The Assistant Chief Nurse demonstrates performance and leadership that is broad enough to improve the care for a group of patients.
- →Functions as a self-directed clinical leader, educator, and consultant utilizing management theory in collaboration with Patient Care Service (PCS) and other services.
- →Functions or scope of assigned duties include, but are not limited to: Provides executive input in the strategic planning, budget, mission, operational planning, and policy development for the specified service.
- →Demonstrates substantial and continuous responsibility for directing, supervising, and managing the specified Service.
- →Aggregates data and demonstrates leadership in the budget process to plan for current, emerging, and future resource requirements (financial, human, material and/or informational) for the specified Service.
- →Identifies outcomes and stop gates that can be improved and leads the performance improvement process to improve and/or sustain clinical and administrative outcomes.
- →Identifies and develops and/or initiates programs to ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
- →Manages time and leave as well as knowledge and oversight of FMLA, Advanced leave, and other special leave.
- →Supports VHA's High Reliability Journey as a leader.
- →Works closely with service line to ensure AES engagement plans are developed, communicated, and implemented in a timely.
- →Assists with initiatives for transforming and sustaining the culture of the health system to a "culture of safety".
- →Responds to internal and external communications to ensure a high level of patient satisfaction.
- →Promotes and contributes to an environment that is free from discrimination.
- →Knows, understands, ensures, and consistently complies with VA information security and privacy policies, procedures, rules, and regulations individually and within the specified service.
Requirements
- ✓Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- ✓All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- ✓Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
- ✓Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- ✓Subject to background/security investigation.
- ✓Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
- ✓Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements (https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-acceptable-documents).
- ✓Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
- ✓Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
- ✓You may be required to serve a probationary period.
- ✓As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 2-year probationary period during which we will evaluate your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest.
- ✓In determining if your employment advances the public interest, we may consider: your performance and conduct; the needs and interests of the agency; whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.
- ✓Upon completion of your probationary period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.
