About the Role

This position is located in the Multi-Door Dispute Resolution Division of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia (Multi-Door). Multi-Door is dedicated to serving the District of Columbia community by providing accessible and effective mediation and alternative dispute resolution services that educate the public, facilitate communication, and empower parties to develop self-determined solutions that result in lasting agreements and strengthened community relations.

What You'll Do

  • Brief Duties of the Position: Serves as a primary point of contact for mediation-related questions, provides effective customer service, and responds promptly and professionally to all inquiries from litigants, attorneys, court staff, judicial officers, and neutrals.
  • Provides case-related information and procedural interpretation to judicial officers, law clerks, attorneys, and court staff, including case status updates, location of case documents, and more detailed explanations of Civil Branch, Family Branch, and court rules, including mediation intake, assignment, and scheduling procedures.
  • Independently monitors and manages mediation program calendars, reviews scheduling changes, and adjusts case assignments based on mediator availability, program needs.
  • Ensures continuity of service to avoid gaps or delays in mediation coverage.
  • Receives, reviews, and validates mediation session documents ensuring all required signatures, case information, and mediation court dates are accurate and compliant.
  • Independently enters, updates, and maintains mediation case information in the Court's case management system ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance with court procedures.
  • Evaluates case information, confidential settlement statements, case types, complexity of issues, and mediator expertise to support appropriate assignment of cases to neutrals, exercising independent judgment within established guidelines to ensure effective case placement.
  • Prepares, issues, and finalizes mediation-related case documents, including reminder letters, mediation notices, remote access instructions, and legal assistance information, ensuring compliance with Civil and Family Branch rules and court procedures.
  • Maintains accurate and detailed case notes documenting all party interactions and case actions.
  • Ensures availability during mediation sessions to respond to mediator inquiries regarding case scheduling, procedural questions, and operational issues, and provides real-time assistance with scheduling or technology-related issues as needed to support mediation proceedings.
  • Maintains a high level of proficiency across all Division systems and applications.
  • Generates statistical reports for mediator term reviews, updates mediator profiles in the Web Mediator Management System, and produces program data and vouchers in the Web Voucher System (WVS) to support operational reporting and compliance requirements.

Requirements

  • A background and security investigation is required.
  • A probationary period of one (1) year must be successfully completed.
  • You must upload a copy of your college transcript or degree for consideration of substitution for years of experience.
  • The transcript must show the name of the college or university, your name, degree conferred date, a list of courses with credit hours, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.
  • Foreign Education: If you are using foreign education to meet qualification requirements, you must upload a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript at the time of application to receive credit for that education.

  • Most military, federal and District of Columbia government service counts toward the time required to go into the next higher annual leave category.
  • Employees can carry over no more than 240 hours of annual leave into the next leave year.
  • Sick Leave is used for personal medical needs, care of a family member, or adoption related purposes.
  • Full-time employees earn four (4) hours of sick leave biweekly.
