About the Role
This position is located in the Engineering Service's Boiler and Chiller Plant at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center. The Air Conditioning Equipment Operator provides 24/7 operational support for critical utility systems essential to patient care, performing a wide range of duties involving the operation, maintenance, and repair of the facility's boiler and chiller plants.
What You'll Do
- →Major duties include, but are not limited to: Operates and performs minor repairs on steam boilers, boiler feedwater pumps, condensate pumps, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, chilled water pumps, condenser water pumps, and associated systems.
- →Starts, stops, adjusts, and regulates boilers, chillers, and related equipment based on fluctuating load demands.
- →Operates and makes minor repairs to the Energy Management System (EMS) controlling HVAC and smoke control systems.
- →Records hourly operating data from gauges and instruments to detect abnormalities, compute make-up water, tonnage, steam flow, and identify potential issues.
- →Responds to station trouble calls; evaluates issues, performs repairs within capability, or escalates to appropriate trades/management.
- →Performs water chemistry testing and applies proper chemical treatments to boiler, chilled water, and condenser systems.
- →Conducts routine preventive maintenance and maintains operational logs and required documentation.
- →Assists mechanics with major equipment repairs and off-season overhauls.
- →Performs minor mechanical repairs such as replacing seals, bearings, valves, pipe fittings, motors, and repairing insulation and piping.
- →Monitors and communicates alarms including fire alarms, disaster notifications, and medical gas alarms, per medical center policy.
- →Conducts required monthly and annual boiler safety device testing per VHA Directive 2003-050.
- →Performs additional duties supporting facility operations as assigned.
- →Work Schedule: Compressed Tour Position Description Title/PD#: Air Conditioning Equipment Operator/PD11462A Physical Requirements: The work requires regular walking tours throughout the boiler and chiller plant, including frequent lifting, kneeling, standing, climbing, and stooping.
- →Repairs may involve working in awkward or cramped positions and lifting items up to 50 pounds.
Requirements
