About the Role

This position serves as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic in the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) shop at the Leavenworth and Topeka VA Medical Centers (VAMC).

What You'll Do

  • Major duties and responsibilities will include: Maintains, repairs, and operates all refrigeration, air conditioning, and air handling equipment.
  • Performs electrical maintenance and installation work on electric systems and equipment.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on all air handling, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Responds to service order calls regarding malfunctioning or inoperable refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
  • Repairs a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems, such as walk-in and reach-in coolers, refrigerators, evaporative coolers, water coolers, and window air conditioning units.
  • Observes and tests for the correct operation of all parts of the refrigeration cycle.
  • Makes repairs on large and small systems that require various types of pneumatic and electrical controls and relays to operate at peak efficiency.
  • Adjusts various pressure, pneumatic, and electrical valves to control the flow of refrigerants, steam, and water.
  • Stops and starts compressors, fans, and other equipment at specific test stages when temperature and pressure changes are required.
  • Performs operational maintenance as scheduled or necessary; this includes adding refrigerant, changing filters, cleaning the strainer, replacing drive bells, and lubricating compressors, fans, shafts, pumps, and moving parts of other operating and standby equipment.
  • Diagnoses trouble and makes repairs by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures, such as broken and bare wiring, burned-out switches and relays, loose connections and fittings, and poorly operating thermostats.
  • Tests equipment using a VOA meter and watt meters.
  • Performs Preventive Maintenance on all filters in the hospital.
  • Maintains a tool and parts inventory for assigned tools, parts, and equipment.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
