About the Role

The VA Central Iowa HCS is recruiting (1) full-time Advanced Practice Nurse - Hematology/Oncology. The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) practices in Oncology/ Hematology Service to provide a full range of services emphasizing quality, timeliness, and the advancement of the Veterans Affairs (VA) mission.

  • Major duties and responsibilities of the position: Provide expert consultation and treatment for patients with hematology or oncology conditions Conduct comprehensive evaluations, including history taking, physical examinations, and the ordering of diagnostic labs and tests and studies Interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests and follow-up on test results in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care in the electronic medical record system May be tasked to travel to Community Based Outpatient Clinics as requested/assigned by the ACOS-SC.
  • Participate in the Central Iowa VA Cancer Subcommittee, which meets at least quarterly and shall report up to the Specialty Care Executive Committee accordingly, in compliance with VHA Directive 1415: VHA ONCOLOGY PROGRAM.
  • May be tasked by the Chief of Heme/One to participate with and contribute to the Transfusion Committee.
  • Provide Electronic Consultation services (E-Consults) and reviews consults for determination if appropriate for Care in the Community orf local/regional VA services.
  • Ensure compliance with VA policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and adhere to clinical guidelines and best practices.
  • Engage in continuing education and professional development activities to maintain board certification and clinical competence.
  • Participate in research activities, if applicable, and contribute to the academic mission of the VA clinic.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • English Language Proficiency.
  • In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.

  • Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued dentification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • You may be required to serve a probationary period.
