About the Role

This position serves as an Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) in the Emergency Department (ED) and Admissions, performing duties on rotating shifts that include day, evening, night, weekends, and holidays. The incumbent supports the Medical Center and may be assigned to work in any unit/ward as needed due to staffing levels and workplace demands. They play a key role in achieving VHA Network Performance Measures related to revenue, customer service, access to care, and overall quality.

What You'll Do

  • The AMSA functions independently, making on-the-spot decisions based on patient needs.
  • The role requires a high level of independent judgment, initiative, and foresight, as well as comprehensive knowledge of relevant laws, practices, and regulations.
  • Duties include: Responsible for greeting the patients in person or by phone, to determine the nature of their medical care needs, questions, or complaints, providing necessary information and initiating appropriate actions.
  • Identify if immediate medical evaluation and treatment are needed.
  • Notify medical staff of serious symptoms or complaints.
  • Investigate complaints, initiate necessary actions to resolve the issues or referral to the appropriate service or section.
  • Explains VA and hospital policies, procedures, and available services to help veterans understand their options.
  • Monitors patient flow, identifying existing and potential delays in processing veterans' medical care requests.
  • Initiate action with clinical staff to expedite cases and ensure the smooth flow of patient care from reception to disposition.
  • Work as a team with healthcare providers and administrative staff to prevent and resolve delays and misunderstandings.
  • Intervenes on patients' behalf to resolve all problems and complaints regarding services rendered.
  • Provides on-the-job training for clerical and technical employees who have face-to-face contact with veterans and the public, offering guidance in resolving difficult and atypical problems.
  • Serves as the primary contact with medical staff on eligibility matters and assists in investigating special cases such as Congressional inquiries.
  • Provides oral explanations of individual eligibility for VA benefits, appropriate fact sheets, and detailed guidance on how to apply and navigate the examination process.

  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
