What You'll Do

  • You will serve as the Division Head for the Materials Engineering and Metrology Division within the Quality Management Department at the Naval Foundry and Propeller Center (NFPC).
  • You will direct a professional workforce of engineers and technicians, setting the strategic vision for materials engineering, research, and quality assurance.
  • You will be the command’s principal advisor on all matters pertaining to materials science, including advanced casting, welding, and non-destructive testing.
  • You will provide authoritative technical guidance and champion innovations that directly impact the quality, performance, and reliability of vital naval components.
  • You will direct the development, implementation, and evaluation of long-range strategic plans for materials engineering and research.
  • You will serve as the principal advisor on all matters of materials science, including advanced casting, welding, additive manufacturing, and non-destructive testing technologies.
  • You will lead the development of new policies, standards, and best practices for materials and manufacturing.
  • You will direct the creation of detailed procedures for the unique and specialized manufacture of propulsor components to meet stringent safety, quality, and performance requirements.
  • You will provide expert technical support for all material-related manufacturing operations by troubleshooting issues and providing technical advice.
  • You will lead evaluations of new designs and R+D projects to improve current components and develop next-generation materials.
  • You will manage and allocate significant budgetary and personnel resources, direct a professional workforce, evaluate performance, and lead all aspects of workforce development and team building.

Requirements

  • Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Successful completion of a professional engineering degree.
  • Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.
  • OR Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.

  • OR Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A (above).
  • Ordinarily, there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions.
