What You'll Do

  • The Assistant Chief of the Collections Management Division is considered an expert in coordinating the planning, development and implementation of a program to effectively track collections items from the time they enter the Library to the time they are removed from the collections, including processing, circulation both inside and outside the Library, and custodial and storage location.
  • This position is located in the Collections Management Division, Preservation Directorate, Discovery and Preservation Services.
  • As the Assistant Chief, you will: Perform the administrative and human resource management functions relative to the staff supervised.
  • Establish guidelines and performance expectations for staff members, which are clearly communicated through the formal employee performance management system.
  • Observe workers' performance; demonstrates and conducts work performance critiques.
  • Provide informal feedback and periodically evaluates employee performance.
  • Resolve informal complaints and grievances.
  • Develop work improvement plans, recommending personnel actions as necessary.
  • Provide advice and counsel to workers related to work and administrative matters.
  • Effect disciplinary measures as appropriate to the authority delegated in this area.
  • Review and approve or disapprove leave requests.
  • Assure that subordinates are trained and fully comply with the provisions of the safety regulations.
  • Serve as a primary advisor on various programs and events, develop authoritative new approaches, methods or standards to resolve critical or highly unusual reference information problems.
  • Advise and counsel appropriate management staff and officials within the agency on matters related to the management of the collections including issues of access, security, inventory control, space, retrieval and organization.
