About the Role

This position serves as the Assistant Chief, Engineering Service as the full alter ego of the Chief with responsibility for the professional Engineering programs such as Maintenance and Repair, Utility Plant Operations, Energy Management and Conservation Program, Vehicle Fleet, Grounds, Capital Planning, and Construction Project Management section at a multi-faceted and affiliated VA Central Texas Veteran Healthcare System, including outlying Community Based Outpatient Clinics.

What You'll Do

  • Major duties include, but are not limited to: The Assistant Chief Engineer is responsible for strengthening and enhancing healthcare facility engineering and operations.
  • This position is responsible for the planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and management process for the Engineering Service that includes setting qualitative and quantitative standards.
  • The Assistant Chief is a member of and routinely participates on VISN and national committees and work groups.
  • In this capacity he meets with others on the committee's from around the country and representatives from VISN, VACO and the VHA Healthcare Engineering and Facilities Enterprise Support Services.
  • This position oversees human resources management matters for the services, including development and implementation of succession and workforce plans.
  • This position supports the VISN Capital and Energy Engineers in the administration of the programs.
  • In this capacity he meets regularly with other Engineers from the VISN and VA Leadership from the Office of Capital Asset Management.
  • The Assistant Chief Engineer provides an interface between the facility, the VISN, and VACO.
  • As part of the Central Texas VA HealthCare System planning team, the Assistant Chief Engineer supports the Strategic Capital Investment Planning (SCIP) process.
  • This position participates in discussion of proposed capital projects for the station and makes preliminary designs of major alterations, improvements, and additions to implement the Medical Center programs.
  • The Assistant Chief Engineer creates and supports programs to ensure the healthcare system manages and maintains fire safety equipment, systems, and life safety building features.
  • The Assistant Chief Engineer responsibility for implementing, managing and monitoring a comprehensive Safety Program as defined by Department policy and meeting the Safety and Life Safety requirements of both the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Joint Commission most recent edition of the Joint Commission Accreditation Manual for Hospitals (AMH).
  • The Assistant Chief Engineer identifies and manages risks associated with highly sophisticated medical equipment and the general physical environment.
  • The Assistant Chief Engineer provides overarching professional engineering services to ensure the appropriate medical equipment and clinical infrastructure is available for the medical mission.
