About the Role

The Supervisor serves as a Supervisory Clinical Laboratory Scientist for the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS) at the Fayetteville VA Medical Center on offshifts, holidays and weekends.

What You'll Do

  • Functions: These assignments require specialized training and experience.
  • In addition to the defined KSA's, employees must have advanced knowledge of specialized and complex subject matter extending beyond the duties of test performance.
  • They have wide latitude for exercising independent judgment. 1.
  • The incumbent performs the full range of supervisory duties and is responsible for the overall supervision of the personnel performing CLS and phlebotomy duties on the off-shift in all areas of the laboratory. 2.
  • Takes responsibility for the day-to-day supervision of the section, sets short and long-term goals, prepares work schedules and assigns duties and provides instruction to subordinates to assure efficient and timely performance of all tests and procedures.
  • Is responsible for the granting of leave to subordinates in the assigned T&L group and communicates with other GS-0644-13 Supervisory CLS's and management as necessary to assure adequate lab coverage.
  • Adjusts staffing levels or work procedures.
  • Collaborates with other GS-0644-13 Supervisory CLS's in completing the laboratory scheduling process. 3.
  • Works as a CLS and phlebotomist as needed and accomplishes duties specifically assigned to subordinates to ensure continuity of clinical testing services.
  • Works off-hour shifts, weekends, holidays, and in other sections of the laboratory. 4.
  • Ensures that all employees under his/her supervision are aware of and abide by the appropriate hospital and laboratory safety regulations.
  • Responsible for maintaining the work area in a clean environment appropriate for the section. 5.
  • Assists employees in obtaining continuing education and determining their training needs.
  • Ensures orientation, training, and competency assessment of staff upon initial test performance and annually thereafter. 6.
