About the Role
This Registered Nurse in Ambulatory Surgery position is located in Nursing Service at the Jamaica Plain location. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week.
What You'll Do
- →Summary The Registered Nurse is responsible for managing complex patient situations, acts as a patient advocate, and provides supportive assistance to all members of the healthcare team.
- →The incumbent is a Registered Nurse who is responsible for the clinical, administrative, research, and educational aspects of the assignment.
- →The Ambulatory Surgery Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive pre-operative and procedural nursing care across Ambulatory Surgery (JP), Minor Procedures, the Medical Surgical Day Unit (West Roxbury) as needed, and Interventional Radiology.
- →The RN functions independently with strong clinical judgment, collaborates effectively with interdisciplinary teams, and ensures safe, high-quality patient care through all phases of the perioperative process.
- →Duties Included but are not limited to: Provide comprehensive pre-operative and procedural nursing care for the Operating room ,Interventional Radiology, and MRI.
- →Conduct full nursing assessments, validate consent and H&P documentation, initiate IV access including venipuncture, and ensure completion of all pre-operative and procedural testing.
- →Confirm surgical site preparation, marking, and consent accuracy.
- →Administer medications as ordered and set up sterile fields for minor procedures.
- →Provide clear pre-operative teaching and review discharge instructions with patients and families using written and verbal communication.
- →Monitor patients post-operatively for recovery from anesthesia/sedation, including side effect Maintain knowledge of ASPAN standards, VHA directives, and service-level SOPs.
- →Ensure accurate, complete, timely documentation for all phases of care in the electronic health record.
- →Function independently and may serve as Charge Nurse as needed.
- →Guide, educate, and support students and new staff members.
- →Apply all aspects of the nursing process, including interdisciplinary, evidence-based care coordination, health promotion, and disease prevention.
Requirements
- ✓Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- ✓All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- ✓Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
- ✓Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.

- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
