About the Role

The position of Plumbing Worker, WG-4206-07, is assigned to Engineering Service, Maintenance and Operations Section, Operations Group, Plumbing Shop at the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System in Tucson, Arizona. This position reports directly to the Operations Supervisor, Maintenance and Operations Section.

What You'll Do

  • Duties include but are not limited to: Installs, modifies, tests, inspects, calibrates and repairs new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, steam, oil, and gas distribution systems, faucets, water closets, fountains, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, mixing valves, back-flow preventers, eye washes, and showers.
  • Works with building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation of systems and equipment.
  • Installs equipment like that described above by completing the routing and placement of systems leading to the equipment, and seating, hooking up, and testing the equipment.
  • Responsible for preventive maintenance of domestic hot and cold-water systems in patient care areas of twenty-four (24) hours or more, for the control and prevention of the Legionella organism as well as scald prevention, per VHA Directive 1061, Prevention of Healthcare Associated Legionella Disease and Scald Injury from Potable Water Distribution Systems.
  • Sampling, flushing, filtering, monitoring, logging, and the constant upkeep with documentation and record-keeping for Monthly Water Quality Reports to the facility Water Safety Committee.
  • Close work orders, documentation of preventive maintenance reports, ordering parts, spare parts and materials needed for the job.
  • Conduct online and phone research with vendors of hard to get materials and supplies.
  • Preferred Experience: A minimum of 1-year practical plumbing experience working on residential and commercial plumbing systems to include working with mixing valves, bathroom fixtures, copper pipe, and cast-iron piping systems is preferred.
  • The incumbent should have some applied experience in brazing and soldering copper pipe in confined spaces and have extensive experience with water testing, current plumbing code, utilizing plumbing equipment to include augers, snaking and jetting machines.
  • Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
