About the Role

The WG-10 Maintenance Mechanic - Pipefitter position is assigned to one of three Maintenance Units within the Engineering Service of the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. The incumbent performs a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep and repair of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities.

What You'll Do

  • This position requires performance of journeyman level pipefitter work and helping various other journeymen within the Engineering Service when available or as needed.
  • Typical work assignments include the performance of visual examinations and work layout to determine the need for, and the performance of, repair work, as well as planning and execution of new fabrication, installation and construction.
  • Duties of the Pipefitter include but are not limited to: Repair piping or associated equipment to complex systems (i.e. domestic water systems, hydronic systems, medical/surgical gas and vacuum systems, control air systems, dental evacuation system, centrifugal chillers, and reciprocating chillers).
  • Disassemble complex devices to determine proper operation and make internal repairs to diaphragms, seats, spring actuators, and flow control devices (i.e. back flow preventors, solenoids, and fire suppression devices).
  • Program computer operated systems such as the lawn sprinkler system, fuel oil systems, etc.
  • Interpret drawings, specifications, schematics, operator and parts manuals, etc. of varying degrees of complexity for complete systems.
  • Prepare requests for parts, materials, tools and services as needed to carry out work assignments.
  • Size, layout and integrate systems associated with the operation of the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system.
  • Use shop mathematics to determine the sizing of pipes and connections required.
  • Perform pipe welding to systems that operate at high pressure and high temperatures.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, repairs, and installations on contaminated drain systems associated with highly infectious and radioactive wastes.
  • Troubleshoot the entire steam distribution system, chilled water, heating water, dual temp, domestic water, secondary water, medical gas (Nitrogen, Nitrous Oxide, Oxygen, Medical Air), medical vacuum, natural gas, to determine why partial flow or no pressure to various points is present.
  • Operate equipment such as threading machines, welding machines, cutting torches, auger machines, sewer cleaning machines, pipe cutting machines, ultrasonic testers, etc.
  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 7:45AM - 04:30 PM Position Description Title/PD#: Pipefitter/PD60258A Physical Requirements: The duties of this position require physical exertion involving lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying object of varying weight, sizes and shapes.
