The Chief Medical Officer provides executive leadership and strategic oversight for VISN medical operations and initiatives for 3+ defined Health Service Areas (HSA), encompassing 20+ Health Care Systems (HCSs). Evaluates compliance with and implementation of national medical guidelines for employees within the incumbent's span of control providing Veterans direct patient care, ancillary care, or administrative services.
What You'll Do
- →Major Duties and Responsibilities of the Position Include: Supports collaboration with the Medical Operations Center (MOC) strategic division leaders to implement national policy.
- →Provides real-time situational awareness and coordinated rapid response capabilities.
- →Supports collaboration with the Business Operations Center and Financial Office to manage embedded financial and human resource units that provide VISN services.
- →Ensures resource allocation for funds and workforce are aligned with Veteran demonstrated needs and VHA leadership priorities.
- →Applies in-depth health care knowledge to develop goals, objectives, and priorities focused on aligning and integrating medical operations across the VISN, HSAs, and HCSs.
- →Enforces standards for performance and manages key resources and stakeholder engagement to achieve program goals.
- →Monitors progress toward objectives, assesses organizational effectiveness, and resolves issues to ensure successful outcomes across complex, diverse health care operations.
- →Collaborates with the HSA Medical Directors within the VISN.
- →Directs mental health services, ensuring access to comprehensive mental health care.
- →Oversees programs addressing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, and other mental health issues.
- →Develops and implements suicide prevention strategies and programs.
- →Manages interventions and follow-up for high-risk Veterans.
- →Oversees services and programs aimed at addressing Veteran homelessness.
- →Coordinates with community resources to provide comprehensive support.
Requirements
- ✓Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- ✓All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- ✓Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
- ✓Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- ✓Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
- ✓Subject to background/security investigation.
- ✓Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.

- ✓Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
- ✓Must pass pre-employment physical evaluation.
- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).

- ✓Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
