About the Role

Psychiatrists at the Salem VA Medical Center (VAMC) are expected to deliver high quality patient care that is timely, patient-centered, recovery oriented as appropriate, and based on the best available research evidence and practice guidelines. The incumbent is directly accountable to the Chief of Mental Health, Salem VAMC. The incumbent works independently; supervision is mainly advisory in nature. This position is within the VA Salem Health Care System in Salem, Virginia.
What You'll Do

- →The incumbent provides first line supervision to residents and physician assistants as assigned, and may be required to lead clinical teams.
- →Follows the ethical standards of the VA and our licensing bodies.
- →Uses clinical judgment and experience when the evidence does not answer the complex clinical questions.
- →Attends to administrative requirements, such as staff meetings, reading of e-mails, timely completion of discharges, daily completion of notes, daily review to make sure all encounters are done for the day, and at a minimum of two peer chart reviews per quarter.
- →Appropriately document clinical work.
- →Consistently communicates and treats customers (Veterans, families, Veteran representatives, all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner.
- →Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures.
- →Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
- →Keeps up with the current literature in the field.
- →Attendance at grand rounds and/or case conferences is strongly encouraged.
- →Research and publication are encouraged, but not required.
- →On call includes in-house call in rotation with others, and some call from home.
Requirements
- ✓Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- ✓All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- ✓Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
- ✓Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- ✓Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
- ✓Subject to background/security investigation.
- ✓Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.

- ✓Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment.
- ✓Must pass pre-employment physical evaluation.
- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
- ✓You may be required to serve a probationary period.

- ✓Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
