About the Role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

What You'll Do

  • **This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCMENT and will remain open until September 21, 2026.
  • The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be July 27, 2026, with subsequent cut-off dates every 2 weeks.
  • Eligible applications received after that date will be accepted on an ongoing basis and qualified candidates will be considered as vacancies become available. **VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package.

  • The incumbent, who also serves as a staff physician, reports directly to the Director of Inpatient Mental Health, or designee, who in turn reports directly to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Mental Health and Homeless Programs, and is responsible for providing psychiatric services to eligible Veterans through the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS).
  • Clinical: 1.
  • Provide evaluation and management of patients. a.
  • Incumbent is responsible for the evaluation of patients admitted to the acute inpatient psychiatry units as well as for patients in the Emergency Department and other Acute Care areas of the hospital when psychiatric consultation is requested. b.
  • Provide teaching/instructions to medical students, neurology, psychiatry and rehabilitation medicine residents, fellows and trainees from other disciplines. b.
  • Incumbent is responsible for the development and application of a treatment plan for patients admitted to the acute inpatient psychiatry units.
  • For CL work (within Acute Care or ED settings), the incumbent will be responsible for delivering recommendations to the primary team for the management and treatment of mental health and behavioral conditions specific to the consultation request that is placed. c.

Requirements

  • Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).

  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
