This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.
What You'll Do
- →The Cardiologist will provide comprehensive care for patients who have illnesses within the scope of cardiology.
- →The scope of these activities covers all phases of ambulatory care.
- →Additional duties include the following: Administrative Writes Medical Orders and prescriptions for non-controlled substances, as necessary, for the care of the patient in accordance with Federal and State law and approval of the supervising Physician.
- →Documents care provided in the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS).
- →Documents the detailed, targeted, initial history and physical examination required for evaluation in the electronic tool(s) required by VA.
- →Obtains consent and documents procedures performed for which the physician is responsible.
- →Provides education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and the use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
- →Reviews and revises policies and scope of practice/standards of operation to meet the needs of the National VA and VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System mandates.
- →Reviews and guides protocols in chronic patient managements including coordinating efforts with fee facilities to meet patients needs and maintain fiscal responsibility.
- →Clinical Responds to and completes consults received for the evaluation of Cardiology including: Performs a comprehensive, detailed, targeted, initial history and physical examination in compliance with national guidelines.
- →Orders diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, X-rays, electromyography (EMG), electrocardiograms (EKGs) and other tests.
- →Consults other disciplines, as necessary, to complete the patient evaluation.
- →Carries out health promotion and disease prevention activities including education and shared decision-making.
- →Competence in cardiology procedures is desirable and documentation of procedures within the past 12 months will be requested reflective of the scope of privileges requested.
Requirements
- ✓Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- ✓All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- ✓Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
- ✓Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- ✓Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
- ✓Subject to background/security investigation.

- ✓Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
- ✓You may be required to serve a probationary period.

- ✓Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
- ✓The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.
