About the Role

Orlando is looking to recruit for Pharmacy Technician (Inpatient/Outpatient Controlled Substance) at the Daytona Clinic.

What You'll Do

  • This position is for a certified Controlled Substance Pharmacy Technician above the full performance level as a GS-8 at the Orlando VA Healthcare System.
  • Pharmacy technicians at this grade level are nationally certified by PTCB or ExCPT and can work autonomously, using independent judgement to perform a full range of duties.
  • Pharmacy technicians above the full performance level can mentor and train lower grade technicians in the practice setting.
  • The employee will assist the pharmacist in providing optimal care and timely service in accordance with the mission, vision, and goals of the Orlando VA Healthcare System and Pharmacy.
  • The incumbent is expected to be able perform all duties related to provision of pharmaceutical care that can be completed by a GS-6 or GS-7 Pharmacy Technician.
  • The pharmacy technician will serve as a subject matter expert and key resource in the day-to-day technician duties within the vault.
  • The technician will be performing assignments such as filling controlled substance prescriptions while maintaining compliance with Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) regulations, managing automation within the vault, procurement of controlled substances, participating in all required audits of controlled substances, and managing workflow and training and orienting staff in their area.
  • Ensures that accountability is maintained from the time controlled substances are received into the vault to the time they are dispensed to the patient, loaded into an automated dispensing cabinet or otherwise destroyed.
  • Pharmacy technicians at this level have a higher level of responsibility for specialized areas of pharmacy and are expected to independently carry out assigned tasks of considerable difficulty.
  • General Accurately interpret, fills, and prepares prescriptions with appropriate medications and or medical supplies for pharmacist verification.
  • Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly condition by assuring that all stock and equipment are in assigned places and all shelves and counters are free of dust and debris in order to create optional work areas.
  • Assures drugs and supplies are appropriately stored and secured according to USP and VA guidelines, including the storage of high-risk, look a-like sound alike, hazardous, controlled substances, corrosive chemical, flammable liquids, and refrigerated items.
  • Receives, checks, rotates, and places in stock all items received from pharmacy procurement section and identifies and reconciles any discrepancies to assure correct items have been received.
  • Utilizes automation dispensing equipment available to the pharmacy staff following all safety and QA procedures.

  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
