Pharmacy Technician - Community Care

About the Role
The Community Care Pharmacy Technician is responsible for the receiving, assessing appropriateness, and processing of Community Care prescribed prescriptions for final review by a pharmacist assigned to Community Care. The Community Care Technician will assist in all daily tasks concerning prescriptions prescribed by non-VA providers including contacting non-VA providers about formulary alternatives and obtaining documentation needed to process prior authorization requests.
What You'll Do
- →Major duties include, but are not limited to the following: Community Care Prescription Support: Receives faxed, mailed, electronically prescribed, or delivered prescriptions written by Community Care providers and documents all received prescriptions in Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- →Reviews EHR to determine authorization to receive Community Care.
- →Contacts patients regarding prescriptions from unauthorized provider visits and routes or returns prescriptions appropriately.
- →Reviews authorized prescriptions for appropriateness using pharmacy technician knowledge, as well as knowledge concerning the national drug formulary and local VA formulary requirements.
- →Obtains prescription clarifications from providers and forwards updates to the reviewing pharmacist Initiates the non-formulary/prior authorization process with the provider and records needed documentation in EMR and workflow file.
- →Follows-up via phone and/or fax with Provider regarding initiated communications concerning non-formulary/prior authorization medications, clarifications, or medication change requests.
- →Inputs authorized prescriptions or prepare electronically prescribed medications in EHR for the review and verification by the Clinical Pharmacist or representative.
- →Contacts patients with updates on prescriptions and documents in EHR.
- →Assists in the tracking and shipping of prescribed controlled substances, as well as all prescribed medications mailed to patients.
- →Reviews and processes electronic cancellations of prescribed medications.
- →Communicates with CBOC representatives when authorization of prescription is requested or when prescription from courier has not been received.
- →Communicate with Procurement Pharmacist or Procurement Technician when specialty medications need to be ordered.
- →Works with procurement team to notify community care providers and patients when medications and/or supplies ordered are unavailable to develop plans for alternative care options.
- →Utilizes pharmacy information systems to answer patient or provider questions related to status of their prescription(s), completion date, package tracking, etc.
Requirements
