About the Role

The Motor Vehicle Operator is a vital member of the Transportation Section within Facilities Engineering Service. The incumbent safely transports patients, caregivers, employees, supplies, medications, and personal belongings between Coatesville VA Medical Center campuses and destinations throughout the tri-state area. As part of a multidisciplinary team, the position supports efficient operations and quality service for Veterans.

What You'll Do

  • The Motor Vehicle Operator is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of a variety of passenger, commercial, snow removal, and grounds maintenance vehicles and equipment.
  • Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Operates gasoline, diesel or electric powered vehicles with gross vehicle weight of up to and including 26,000 lbs safely in narrow and congested locations such as parking lots, interstates, and metropolitan areas in various types of weather.
  • Operates vans, buses, and motor coaches with capacity up to 52 passengers and gross weight of 54,000 pounds.
  • Follows all traffic and safety regulations and recognize and avoid hazardous conditions.
  • Performs operator maintenance on all vehicles operated (e.g., monitoring fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, checking tire pressure and hose connections, safety belts and washing the vehicle.
  • Determines, after conducting daily pre-use inspections, whether vehicle is in safe operating condition and identify other miscellaneous vehicle needs.
  • Operates snow removal equipment to include, but not limited to, snow plows, salt trucks, 10 ton dump trucks, and tractors.
  • Operates grounds maintenance equipment such as, but not limited to, tractors, loaders, street sweepers, self propelled mowers and weed eaters when needed by the facility.
  • Remains attentive and maintains a defensive driving attitude while driving for short or extended periods of time, often at night transporting passengers.
  • Operates all equipment in a safe and satisfactory manner and ensures all vehicles maintain proper fluid levels while being utilized and prior to leaving for the day.
  • Transports patients and their belongings to destinations on and off campus.
  • Complies with all policy and procedures when using the fleet charge cards to purchase fuel.
  • Demonstrates cooperativeness, adaptability, and flexibility to perform effectively as a team member for and with others to accomplish the mission.
  • Serves as an integral part of the facility snow removal team during winter months.
