The GS-7 GI Medical Instrument Technician is in the Endoscopy department at GC Sony Montgomery VA Medical Center. MITs at this level provide technical support to Gastroenterology and Surgical physicians performing endoscopy procedures. They function as the subject matter experts for all equipment and supplies needed to service the Gastroenterology specialty.
What You'll Do
- →The incumbent is proficient with GI endoscopic equipment and is responsible for ensuring proper performance of endoscopic equipment.
- →Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for keeping current on all area SOPs and providing annual education on SOPs Prepares procedural rooms for the performance of endoscopic procedures.
- →This involves setting up instruments, testing the equipment for proper operation, biopsy forceps, specimen bottles, polypectomy snares, retrievers, injectors, dilators, balloons, electrocautery units, accessory probes, and patient positioning.
- →Assists in obtaining biopsies, brushing, polypectomy, inflation of balloon dilators, drawing up medications, and handling of intraprocedural equipment for safe and optimum outcomes.
- →The incumbent has advance knowledge on how to prepare diagnostic biopsy specimens, assessing the adequacy of various types of specimens, proper orienting of biopsy specimens, and placing specimens in proper containers with appropriate labeling for precise lab processing.
- →Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies in endoscopy rooms.
- →Place orders and follow through on obtaining any deficient supplies/equipment.
- →MIT also works with logistic personnel to identify additional needed supplies as well as stock that is not relevant to the department.
- →The GI tech also ensures the integrity of supplies used intraprocedural.
- →Work Schedule: 7:30am to 4:00pm, Monday - Friday and "On-Call" as needed; Subject to change based on needs of the Agency.

- →Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
- →Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
- →Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
