About the Role

The Lead Histopathology Technologist works in the Laboratory of Syracuse VAMC and serves as an expert providing authoritative advice and consultation for difficult, complex, or unique tests requiring special knowledge. Advises all organizational levels on various aspects of specialized testing including appropriateness that takes into consideration clinical context.

What You'll Do

  • The Lead Histopathology Technologist must possess broad knowledge of biological sciences and skills necessary to process anatomic pathology specimens.
  • The work performed by the Histotechnology Technologist is vital for pathologists to interpret laboratory results and provide a diagnosis and prognosis to help facilitate appropriate and life-saving treatments.
  • Major duties and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to: Provides authoritative advice and consultation for more markedly difficult, complex, unique, and/or emerging tests requiring special knowledge.
  • Research, develop, test and optimize and validate complex histochemical stains, immunohistochemistry protocols and /or insitu hybridization (ISH) protocols, including, but not limited to, new antibodies, probes, detection protocols/kits, new lots and concentrated antibody titrations.
  • Monitors and make work assignments, provides input on performance, resolves daily workplace issues, and maintains efficient workflow.
  • Provides training and guidance for new and current employees.
  • Oversees that the workflow is distributed and balanced to maintain an efficient workflow among staff.
  • Uses independent judgement and resources, troubleshoots a variety of specialized lab tests and equipment.
  • Maintains adequate level of supplies in Morgue.
  • Maintains and documents the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment.
  • Uses, calibrates, identifies malfunctions, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Diagnoses deviations in test performance due to instrument malfunction.
  • Communicates effectively and courteously while working as a healthcare team member.
  • Provides excellent service as defined by the customer (healthcare providers, patients, and others).
