About the Role

You will serve as a GENERAL ENGINEER (SPECIAL PROJECTS) in the Engineering Department of SUPERVISOR OF SHIPBUILDING GROTON.

What You'll Do

  • You will lead Integrated Process Teams (IPTs) supporting submarine design, conversion, modernization, and other assigned engineering projects.
  • You will explain team goals and objectives, focusing government and contractor resources to rapidly resolve technical program issues.
  • You will collaborate with team members to prioritize critical customer actions and balance limited resources to meet design and construction schedules.
  • You will identify emergent problems, take immediate action to prevent program delays, and minimize government cost impacts.
  • You will initiate measures to minimize costs and improve efficiency without compromising team effectiveness.
  • You will keep supervisors informed of emergent work, workload changes, and impacts to program schedules and key events.
  • You will provide information to support management focus on identifying and mitigating technical and program risks.
  • You will establish and maintain effective relationships with division heads, contractor managers, NAVSEA personnel, and other stakeholders.
  • You will recommend actions, adjustments, or compromises to support program goals and mission requirements.
  • You will provide performance input to division heads and advise team members on assigned project matters.
  • You will review, analyze, research, and prepare correspondence on design deficiencies and determine the technical adequacy of contractor recommendations.
  • You will consult with contractors, participate in technical conferences, and recommend corrective actions for engineering issues.
  • You will provide engineering recommendations, technical comments, and conference representation supporting design, construction, and testing.
  • You will confer with NAVSEA, contractors, and subcontractors to resolve design and construction issues and recommend design and fabrication improvements.

Requirements

  • Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Successful completion of a professional engineering degree.
  • Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.
  • OR Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.

  • OR Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A (above).
  • Ordinarily, there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions.
