The Light Duty Vehicle Division in the Office of Rulemaking-Crashworthiness Standards provides a focal point for the development of motor vehicle safety performance improvements and promulgation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and regulations dealing with vehicle crashworthiness, standardization of test devices, and crash data collection and analysis.
What You'll Do
- →Primarily works independently in motor vehicle standards preparation, and standards implementation and maintenance.
- →Is responsible for all technical, regulatory, and policy related issues regarding certain FMVSSs related to light duty vehicles.
- →The incumbent is responsible for specified portions of the development and management of the routine parts of complex engineering projects.
- →The incumbent has technical responsibility for the interpretation and application of the findings.
- →The incumbent provides necessary but routine analyses in support of crashworthiness and biomechanical engineering aspects of rulemaking activities.
- →We are seeking highly qualified individuals who are willing to meet the fast-paced challenges of public service while supporting our mission to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries resulting from motor vehicle crashes.
- →NHTSA desires someone who is a highly motivated self-starter who can effectively communicate both within the agency and with external stakeholders.
Requirements
- ✓CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which we will evaluate your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest.

- ✓Upon completion of your probationary period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.
- ✓SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
- ✓GOVERNMENT TRAVEL CARD: This position involves travel.
- ✓A government contractor-issued travel card will be issued and must be retained for official business only.
- ✓BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: A background security investigation is required for all selected individuals.
- ✓Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of the security investigation and favorable adjudication.
- ✓Failure to meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
- ✓PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You must complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).
- ✓TIME-IN-GRADE: Federal applicants must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade in the competitive or excepted service in the executive branch to satisfy time-in-grade restrictions contained in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F.
- ✓MANDATORY EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: A.
- ✓COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE -- College-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.
