This position is a Fire Protection Specialist that will serve as the Park Fire Chief at Yosemite National Park within the Branch of Visitor and Resource Protection. One position is available. Position is Merit Promotion within the Department of the Interior, not to exceed 1 year from date of appointment. At any time during this appointment this position can be made permanent with no further competition. Work schedule of this position will be 40 hours a week/80 hours in a bi-weekly pay period.
What You'll Do
- →The incumbent is responsible for the execution of a program to ensure life safety of park personnel, concessionaire employees, a large ongoing population of public visitors, and physical protection of park facilities, structures, cultural and natural resources.
- →Manages the structural fire programs for the assigned park.
- →Submits yearly structural fire budget requirements for projects, equipment acquisition, travel and training, and service contracts.
- →Prepares/submits reports of fire losses and trends, recommends steps to alleviate unfavorable conditions.
- →Where assigned can oversee and manage emergency services programs as a collateral duty.
- →Ensures that fire suppression, detection, and fire alarm systems in the park are designed and installed in accordance with International Code Council, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards, and National Park Service (NPS) manuals.
- →Works in coordination with the Fire Code Official to review plans and monitor phases of construction throughout the park to ensure that on-site inspection of new construction and alteration/maintenance projects are conducted for compliance.
- →Assumes command of firefighting and emergency activities while on duty.
- →Directs emergency services equipment and personnel to respond to all types of emergencies.
- →Determines protection requirements and schedules subordinates and equipment for standby and special responses or public events for the park.
- →Investigates the origin and cause of all fires and prepares NPS fire incident reports as well as supplemental technical investigation reports in coordination with safety and law enforcement.
Requirements
- ✓Citizenship required.
- ✓Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- ✓Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit EFT Program.
- ✓Any individual who is currently holding, or has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet time-in-grade requirements (must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent in the Federal service); with few exceptions as outlined in 5 CFR 300.603(b).
- ✓Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal civilian employees applying for reinstatement who have had a break in service of less than one year, as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointments.
- ✓Time-in-grade does not apply to new excepted service appointments and must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
- ✓You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment.
- ✓In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
- ✓You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties.
- ✓Government housing is required.
- ✓You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards.
- ✓A uniform allowance will be provided.
- ✓You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
- ✓If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
