About the Role

The Electrician works under the general supervision of the Utility Management Unit Foreman within Facilities Management Service within Sheridan VA Medical Center and satellites. The incumbent is assigned a wide variety of duties of a journeyman electrician involving installation, modification, repair, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance and testing of complex electrical systems, circuits, equipment, appliances, controls, components, lighting fixtures and fire alarm systems.

What You'll Do

  • Major duties include, but are not limited to: Performs work under general supervision of Utility Management Unit Foreman.
  • Performs a wide variety of duties of a journeyman electrician.
  • Installs, modifies, repairs, performs troubleshooting and preventive maintenance and testing of: complex electrical systems, circuits, equipment, appliances, controls, components, lighting fixtures, and fire alarm systems.
  • Applies familiarity with the provisions of the National Electrical Code and sufficiently knowledgeable of the entire code to satisfactorily research special requirements or applications.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics and operation and maintenance manuals.
  • Applies knowledge in the use of electrical test instruments in order to trace and locate the cause of equipment and control device malfunctions and then complete repairs or adjustments.
  • Skilled in cutting, threading, bending and installation of rigid pipe and other conduit systems and a variety of other raceway systems.
  • Performs pulling conductors through raceway systems, phasing out and making connections, sometimes under load (when they are "hot").
  • Under emergency conditions, may be required to splice high voltage (12.5KV) cables.
  • Maintains and repairs all electrical equipment including transformers, feeders, motors, generators, starters, overload and over current protectors and controllers.
  • Troubleshoots and maintains electric and electronic control circuits on various equipment including laundry equipment, dietetic equipment, rotary files, electric beds, fire alarm system, tray conveyors, and incinerators.
  • Selects proper wire gauges, insulation, protective devices and switching for a variety of equipment, lighting and miscellaneous electrical loads.
  • Balances service loads over three phases.
  • Possesses journeyman skill in the use of all common electrical hand and power tools and testing equipment as required.
