About the Role

The Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science has a mission to deliver scientific discoveries and major scientific tools to transform our understanding of nature and advance the energy, economic, and national security of the United States. Office of Science is the nation's largest federal sponsor of basic research in the physical sciences and are a major supporter of research in such key scientific fields as physics, materials science, computing, and chemistry.

What You'll Do

  • As the Director, Scientific User Facilities, you will: Plan, develop, and implement vital, productive, forefront research programs conducted in DOE laboratories, universities, and other public and private institutions.
  • Assure adequate financing for the activities in the area of responsibility, sets priorities for activities, and apportions available funding among them.
  • Review and make final approvals on staff recommendations concerning research agreements and individual proposals for facility or instrumentation projects.
  • Implement thorough merit evaluation using independent peer review for new and ongoing activities supported in accordance with the requirements identified in the Code of Federal Regulations for the grant program and published guidelines for the DOE laboratory programs and facilities.
  • Advise and assist the head of the office in the formulations and management of ongoing and new programs and policies.
  • Maintain strong, collegial relations with other programs within the office, the organization, DOE field offices, DOE laboratories, academic and other institutions both domestic and foreign, and the broad scientific community.
  • Represent the division, the office, the organization, and the DOE in matters pertaining to the portfolio of the division to professional societies, coordinating committees, task forces, and various other entities, including national entities.

Requirements

  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.

  • There are three key documents that contain important information about your rights and obligations.
  • Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
  • (Please ensure transcripts show required courses) or B.
  • Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
  • This vacancy has a positive education requirement.
  • You must submit unofficial or official copies of your college transcripts that shows list of courses, grades earned, completion dates, and quarter or semester hours earned.
  • An official transcript will be required if you are selected.
  • Failure to provide copies of your college transcripts may result in a rating of "Ineligible".
  • A college or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S.
  • Department of Education.
